Who hasn’t heard of the Gehry Hotel? It’s one of the oldest wineries in Rioja Alava, initially known as the Marquis de Riscal. The hotel, designed by the Canadian architect Frank Gehry, features titanium coverings that resemble a mauve hat with golden ripples, overlooking the scenic Elciego hill. The City of Wine project aimed to create a stunning architectural spectacle that would attract international guests willing to pay premium rates.
Gehry reportedly accepted the project after a bottle of 1929 wine, his birth year, was opened in his presence. The hotel mirrors the titanium design he used at the Guggenheim in Bilbao. While the 43 rooms showcase luxurious design, some face issues such as humidity and chlorine smells from the spa located on the lower floors. The restaurant, despite having a fantastic view, has a cramped corner and a hidden kitchen that forces staff to move carefully to avoid accidents.
The international group Starwood, under its prestigious brand The Luxury Collection, manages the hotel flawlessly. The management ensures smooth operations and anticipates guests’ needs seamlessly. They even offer guided tours of the winery, enhancing the overall experience. Guests often leave with reasonably priced wine boxes and cherished memories of a gourmet dinner crafted by the Michelin-starred chef Francis Paniego.
Whether you admire Gehry’s architecture or not, the Marqués de Riscal winery has seen increased exports, and the hotel remains one of the top internationally recognized destinations in Spain.
