Vallferosa in Lleida, Catalonia is a fantastic spot for a holiday in Spain. Imagine following coordinates that lead you to a stunning cylindrical tower surrounded by rocky hills and Mediterranean plants that don’t grow too tall, allowing you to fully appreciate this piece of 10th-century military architecture.
The Tower of Vallferosa was once part of a castle, though there’s no trace of the castle itself anymore. Likely, it was dismantled to build the nearby church and village houses. The tower stands at 11 meters high and has battlements you can see up close by carefully climbing a rickety wooden staircase inside the structure. However, if you prefer, you can simply admire them from below.
While you’re there, you can also explore the remains of the old church nearby. Only the façade, walls, and roofless aisles are left, which makes for some amazing photos from inside the church. You’ll also find remnants of land abandoned during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39, medieval tombs carved into the rock, and other historical features.
If you visit in autumn, don’t miss the chance to explore the local wine roads—sampling some local wine is always a good idea! For a refreshing walk, you can leave the highway, park your car at LV 3005, and enjoy a 13 km circular route that passes through Vallferosa.
