Exploring the Art and Nature of Utsukushi-ga-hara-kogen Highlands in Japan

The hot springs aren’t the only reason tourists flock to the Chushin Yatsugatake Kogen Quasi-National Park near Nagawa, Japan. Just north of the park, atop a large lava plateau, there’s a unique outdoor art trail. Located about 2000 meters above sea level, this spot offers expansive views of the Japanese mountains and even a glimpse of Mount Fuji from the Ogato vantage point. When you’re done taking in the breathtaking scenery, you can explore the scattered artworks in this tranquil and sparsely populated area.

The Utsukushi-ga-hara Kogen Art Museum features around 400 pieces of art in a permanent exhibition set against a lush natural backdrop. Among the many intriguing installations, you’ll find legless and headless zebras, highly stylized motorcycles, angels dancing on cylindrical columns, enormous boots, and inverted pyramids. There’s also a character that closely resembles Don Quixote, adding a touch of familiarity to this unique experience.
